Number Between X and Y Ploy

The ploy of asking for a number “between x and y” in order to preclude the naming of x or y appears in “Effect II” in J. F. Orrin's The Conjurer's Vade Mecum, 1922, p. 48. This is the earliest description of this limiting idea so far discovered.
